Pre-Role Play Timeline
500 - 1515 - Shinobi Clans war amongst themselves for territory, rights of passage, reputation and honor. Some are hired by lords of various estates and territories to carry out jobs of various natures. These include territory conflicts and assassinations. This system of hiring Shinobi Clans for jobs continues for decades.
1516 - Formation of the first Shinobi Village, Konohagakure no Sato and subsequent establishment of the 'One Village per Country Policy'. During the remainder of this year, six other Shinobi Villages are established. Over the next decade, these new villages would abide by the system of one village per country and continue to take on jobs requested of them by their respective countries. The feudal lords of the country would hire their respective Shinobi Village, thus evolving from the ideals of hiring only a clan of Shinobi to do any job. In this manner, economy within each village was established.
1517 - With the passing of two years, the total number of Shinobi Villages was that of nine. Of these, only five stood out from among them. Their booming economies put them ahead of the other four, but set them as equals with each other. These were the five villages that were within the five major countries of the continent: Hi, Mizu, Kaze, Kaminari, and Tsuchi. The other countries of Ame, Kusa, Taki, and Shimo had even begun to hire these five villages, rather than their small, respective ones. Thus, these villages and nations came to be known as the Five Great Shinobi Villages, Hidden within the Five Great Nations. The Villages are as follows:
Konohagakure
Sunagakure
Iwagakure
Kirigakure
Kumogakure
1520 - While organization within each respective village continues to evolve the economies of the Five Great Shinobi Villages begin to boom while the smaller villages begin to see economic issues already. To further complicate such matters, three of the nine Tailed Beasts from the old days reappear in the lands of Ame no Kuni, Kusa no Kuni, and Shimo no Kuni. The Chakra Beasts begin to rampage, causing utter chaos and destruction to the country side. As these monsters approach the respective villages, the Shodaime Hokage is informed of the matter. Being the closest to most of the Demons, a great battle ensues over the course of the next ten days, in which the Hokage begins to seal the beasts using his superior Mokuton and Sealing Ninjutsu.
Later this year, reconstruction of the villages that were ravaged by the Two Tailed Neko, Three Tailed Tortoise, and Five Tailed Dolphin Horse, begins. Konoha, Kumo, and Suna aid in this endeavor.
1522 - The One Tailed Shukaku and the Four Tailed Gorilla appear in the deserts of Kaze no Kuni. Requests for aid are sent to Iwagakure and Konohagakure by Suna, asking for help in sealing the beasts. Konoha is first to respond, with Iwagakure coming to the battle late. Ultimately, the Shodaime Hokage seals these two beasts as well.
1527 - The appearance of the Six Tailed Demon Slug, the Seven Tailed Demon Beetle, and the Eight Tailed Demon Octopus in the country sides of Tsuchi no Kuni and Mizu no Kuni causes further destruction to the healing continent. Again, the Shodaime Hokage's aid is requested. However, the Hokage travels to Mizu no Kuni first and seals the Six and Seven Tailed Beasts. This causes the country side of Tsuchi no Kuni to come under heavy damage, even with the help of Sunagakure Shinobi. Many lives are lost to the Hachibi, but with the late arrival of the Hokage, the beast is also sealed. Iwagakure expresses displeasure with Konohagakure and their leader for being so late and for allowing so many lives to be lost. The Tsuchikage also expresses great displeasure with Sunagakure, claiming that its Shinobi are 'incapable of combat and not worthy of being called Shinobi'. Though apologies are made on all sides, ultimately this begins the harboring of ill feelings toward Konohagakure and Sunagakure by Iwagakure.
1528 - The Nine Tailed Demon Fox, the last of the Tailed Beasts, makes its appearance in Hi no Kuni and begins its rampage toward Konohagakure. Being the strongest and fiercest of all the Tailed Beasts, Suna and Konoha Shinobi along with the Shodaime Kazekage and Shodaime Hokage are unable to keep the Demon Fox from entering the walls of Konohagakure. The allied force's request for help from the other villages is only answered by Takigakure, Amegakure, and Kusagakure. Kumogakure does not reach the area in time, while both Kirigakure and Iwagakure make no effort to send aid. Throughout the next two days the battle rages on but the beast is eventually pushed back from the gates of Konoha, where it is finally sealed by the Hokage.
1532 - Having procured and sealed away all of the nine Tailed Beasts, the Shodaime Hokage wishes to mend the wounds that previous battles caused between his village and the other Shinobi Villages. By giving each Shinobi Village a Tailed Beast as a gesture of kindness and willingness to work together to further their economies, Hi no Kuni came to be left with only the Kyūbi no Yōko. This was in an attempt to balance the power of these beasts among each village, so that conflicts over such power would not be instigated. It was also an attempt to rekindle the bonds between Konoha, Kiri, and Iwa yet this ultimately failed. The other eight Bijuu were distributed among the other villages as follows:
- Spoiler:
Sunagakure- Ichibi no Shukaku (One Tailed Shukaku)
Yukigakure- Nibi (Two Tailed Neko)
Kirigakure- Sanbi (Three Tailed Tortoise)
Iwagakure- Yonbi (Four Tailed Gorilla)
Amegakure- Gobi (Five Tailed Dolphin Horse)
Kusgakure- Rokubi (Six Tailed Demon Slug)
Takigakure- Nanabi (Seven Tailed Demon Beetle)
Kumogakure- Hachibi (Eight Tailed Demon Octopus)
Konohagakure- Kyūbi no Yōko (Nine Tailed Demon Fox)
1539 - Though the Shodaime had meant for relations between the villages to ease after passing the Tailed Beasts to each of them, this act had ultimately been fuel added to the fire. Iwagakure and Kumogakure sought to control as many of these beasts as possible. Thus, Kumogakure invaded Yukigakure and stole the sealing pot that held the Two Tailed Neko's spirit. During this same year, Iwagakure would invade Amegakure and procure the Five Tailed Dolphin Horse spirit's sealing charm. Thus, the balance of power had shifted. Ame and Yuki fought as best they could, but ultimately their forces were no match for Iwa and Kumo. Ambassadors from Yuki and Ame were sent to Konohagakure in hopes that the Shodaime Hokage would be able to settle such matters. However, the Hokage was hesitant to involve Konoha in such matters even with the possession of the Nine Tails.
1542 - Feeling pressure both from within Kirigakure and from the increasing power shift of Iwagakure and Kumogakure, the Shodaime Mizukage decides to send a team of highly skilled assassins to Kusagakure and claim the Rokubi's sealing charm. The matter mostly remains quiet, but eventually Kirigakure comes to be in possession of the Rokubi, thus making their Bijuu count two. The ensuing battle left Kusagakure wounded and the next few years would plunge the Hidden Grass Village into further turmoil.
1546 - Sunagakure comes to possess the Nanabi, though not through an act of war. Instead, Takigakure willingly gives the Hidden Sand the Seven Tailed Demon Beetle, which had been sealed away in a new charm. Takigakure had attempted to seal the Seven Tails in a Shinobi at birth, hoping to create a living weapon with the ability to harness the power of the Bijuu. They had ultimately failed several times and each time, the Seven Tails broke free and rampaged throughout the village. On these two occasions, it had taken many lives to gain control of the Demon once again. Thus, when passing the Seven Tails onto Sungakure, they also passed their knowledge up to that point of sealing the beast within a human. In exchange, the Hidden Waterfall Village only asked for Sunagakure's help in rebuilding as well as protection. Thus the possession of the Bijuu would be as follows:
- Spoiler:
Konohagakure- Kyūbi no Yōko
Sunagakure- Ichibi no Shukaku
Nanabi
Kirigakure- Sanbi
Rokubi
Kumogakure- Hachibi
Nibi
Iwagakure- Yonbi
Gobi
1547 - Sharing their new found knowledge with their closest ally, Konohagakure, Sunagakure sought to perfect the sealing method with the help of the Shodaime Hokage and the best Sealers of both villages. Kumogakure Shinboi caught wind of this project and would spend the next two years sending various spies to Konoha and Suna in an attempt to gain what knowledge they had. They had passed word of this project onto Iwagakure and Kirigakure as well. Kirigakure sought to accomplish the same thing using their own methods, while the Tsuchikage did nothing.
1549 - The first Jinchuuriki is created in Sunagakure. With the perfection of the Sealing Technique by both Konohagakure and Sunagakure, the Hidden Sand was successful in sealing the Ichibi into a new born. Over the next few years, the young girl would be under constant surveillance as Suna sought to study her reactions to the sealed beast as well as how she would utilize it's power. Elsewhere, Kumogakure would come to demand the knowledge of the sealing method from both Konoha and Suna. They argued that being able to seal their Tailed Beasts in a Shinobi gave those villages an advantage in terms of power, and they claimed that Konoha and Suna would soon seek to return to the days of battling over territory. Iwagakure sided with Kumogakure on this matter. However, Konoha and Suna refused to give up such knowledge, as the Shodaime Hokage had already regretted passing the Tailed Beasts previously.
1550 - The Great Shinobi World War begins with the invasion of Sunagakure by Kumogakure and Iwagakure, in an attempt to claim the Hidden Sand's Tailed Beasts and the knowledge of the sealing method. Seeing their unwillingness to cooperate with their demands, Iwa and Kumo brand both Suna and Konoha as war mongers and instigators of violence. This first battle is fought on the border of Kaze no Kuni and Ame no Kuni. Lasting nearly 5 long days, this battle ultimately ends in a stalemate, causing Iwa and Kumo to retreat to the border of Ame no Kuni and Tsuchi no Kuni. Konohagakure and Sunagakure are outraged and form an official alliance which also consists of Kusagakure and Takigakure.
1551 - Within the first year of the war, Yukigakure is decimated. The advancing forces of Konoha and Suna sought to invade Kumo from within Shimo no Kuni. The advancing force clashes with an allied Iwa and Kumo force in Shimo no Kuni, which results in the destruction of the Hidden Snow Village. Lacking the economic strength to rebuild and recover from the war, the Hidden Snow Village ceases to exist. Many of its Shinobi find their way into Takigakure, Kumogakure, and some travel as far as Kirigakure. The alliance of Kumo and Iwa eventually push the advancing Leaf and Sand back into the Land of Fire, thus earning a victory.
1552 - With battles continuing across the continent, the war presses on. Kirigakure joins the alliance of Kumo and Iwa, after receiving several strong urges to do so from the Hidden Stone. Their first attack is launched on the harbors of an unsuspecting Land of Fire. This effectively allows Kiri to destroy nearly all of the Hidden Leaf's water transportation and deals a blow to sea-based trade routes. Within the day, a battalion of Leaf Shinobi is sent to deal with the advancing force that begins to sweep into the Land of Fire. Kirigakure is pushed out of the borders and regroups its forces so as to join the front lines with Kumo and Iwa.
1553 - With the new year comes further advances on the battlefield and Iwa, Kumo, and Kiri continue to bombard Konoha's and Suna's borders with wave after wave of attack. Various attempts to get into the country and cut off supply lines are made but none are successful. However, Iwa forces make it into the Land of Wind during the mid year and seize control of a large area near the northern border, as well as a tactical fortress. They will continue to hold this position and slowly advance south into the Land of Wind for the remainder of the year.
1554 - With the previous loss of the northern border, Suna redoubles efforts to regain the area. Iwa and Kumo forces continue to grow ever-closer to Sunagakure with each passing day. Konoha makes the difficult decision to split their forces in half, sending one half to help Suna regain the border while the remainder confronts Kirigakure and attempts to keep them out of the Land of Fire. The combined Suna and Konoha forces manage to push Iwa and Kumo back and reclaim the border over the length of two weeks. However, Iwa's main force combined with Kirigakure and penetrated the Border of the Land of Fire, ravaging the land as they went. Yet they too were stopped by the Konoha forces. Soon a stalemate broke out and the entirety of the war seemed to focus on this battle, which remain in a stalemate for the rest of the year. Each side would launch tactics against the other and yet neither could seem to prevail over the opponents.
1555 - Finally, the Great Shinobi World War comes to an end with an armistice treaty. The establishments of the Five Great Nations are all wounded severely. Kumogakure, Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Konohagakure took the most damage. However, the smaller villages of Amegakure and Kusgakure were nearly obliterated as a direct result of their lands being the theater for most, if not all of the major battles of the war. In terms of casualties, Kirigakure and Iwagakure suffered the most. The economies of all five of the Great Nations were in danger of collapsing, but restructuring and reorganizing are top priorities of every nation.
1556 - When Iwagakure and Kumogakure requested aid from their previous ally, Kirigakure, in rebuilding their villages and establishing trade routes, the Hidden Mist refused. Having been the only village to see minimal physical damage, the Hidden Stone and Hidden Cloud presumed that the Hidden Mist would have the power to aid them with reconstruction and reorganization programs. However, within the Hidden Mist, the threat of civil war was looming as a direct result of having sided with the Hidden Stone during the war as well as various internal affairs. For this reason, Kirigakure chose to aid Sunagakure and Konohagakure, as well as their minor allies in rebuilding. While Kumo and Iwa took this as a major offense, the issue was ultimately dropped, as neither country had the will nor man power to do anything about the Hidden Mist's betrayal.
1557 - The Wind Daimyo of Kaze no Kuni approaches Sunagakure and the Shodaime Kazekage with a plan to invade Hi no Kuni in an attempt to secure a portion of the country's territory. Given the Hidden Sand's ties with the Hidden Leaf, and thus the Land of Fire, The Shodaime Kazekage and the other citizens of Sunagakure refused to take part. Tensions between Sunagakure and the Land of Wind's Feudal Lord were mounting and because of this, Sunagakure was unable to inform the Land of Fire about the Wind Daimyo's plan which would lead to future, albeit minor tensions between Suna and Konoha.
1558 - The Wind Daimyo decides to execute his plan to invade the Land of Fire with his own personal army of Shinobi and Samurai that are loyal to him and him alone. A small-scale, but bloody battle ensues. However, Konohagakure is quick to react and the Wind Daimyo's forces are pushed out of the Hi no Kuni border. After the event passes, a summit meeting between the Shodaime Hokage and Shodaime Kazekage takes place, in which the situation is explained in regards to Sunagakure's silence about the attack.
1559 - The Shodaime Mizukage is killed during the civil war within the Hidden Mist. The Rogue Ninja that took his life, escapes to the mainland and is labeled as the first historical entry into Kirigakure's Bingo Book. The Nidaime Mizukage is quickly selected by Kirigakure's Shinobi Council.
1560 - With Iwagakure still undergoing reconstruction plans from the war, cleaning up from the devastation of a failed attempt at sealing one of their bijuu in a host, and the morale reaching an all-time low the village begins to request aid from Kirigakure once again. The Hidden Mist again denies the request. Next, the Shodaime Tsuchikage requests that Sunagakure share their knowledge of sealing the Bijuu as a gesture of goodwill and tidings of peace. With the previous tensions still thick, Sunagakure refuses.
1561 - Desperate to put itself back as one of the most powerful of the Five Great Nations, Iwagakure makes its move. An ambush battalion invades Sunagakure with the hopes of procuring the scrolls containing the sealing methods required to produce a Jinchuuriki host. This results in a battle that lasts through the night and into the next day. During this time, political tension within Sunagakure erupts into a full-scale civil conflict and those who are loyal to the Shodaime Kazekage are forced to fight a battle on two fronts. Ultimately the civil dispute is settled and the Hidden Sand pushes the Hidden Stone's ambush battalion out of their land, though not without suffering casualties and damage.
1562 - The Shodaime Tsuchikage, having lived nearly 100 years, requests a friendly duel with the Shodaime Raikage, who has lived nearly as long. A great duel ensues, lasting throughout the remainder of the evening. That night, both Kages fall to the ground and are quickly carried to a medical tent, where their wounds are tended to. However, old age mixed with the damage done by the other causes them to realize their time is near. Thus the Shodaime Tsuchikage appoints the Nidaime Tsuchikage, while on his deathbed. The Shodaime Raikage does the same, claiming that one day, his successor shall win the next duel.
1563 - The Shodaime Kazekage's health begins to worsen. Deciding that he is no longer fit to lead Sunagakure, the Shodaime steps down from his position and passes the mantel to his daughter. The Nidaime Kazekage is the youngest Kage to assume the position in the history of the Five Great Nations, thus far and also the first female Kage.
1564 - The life of the Shodaime Hokage is lost when the Nine Tailed Demon Fox breaks free from its host. Having been sealed inside his wife, the Demon Fox took advantage of the natural weakening of the seal over the many long years. It rampaged throughout the village after having claimed the life of the Shodaime Hokage. However, a group of dedicated Fuuinjutsu Shinobi were successful in sealing the beast into a sealing charm that same night. The appointment of the Nidaime Hokage took place through a selection process governed by Konohagakure's Shinobi Council.
